cannot find the year for my serial number

I have a 4.5 merc (45) with 7119819 serial number. Cannot figure out how to remove choke assembly to create enough clearance to remove carb. Cannot find year for my motor as no serial numbers (that I can find) start higher than 65xxxx. Will run for a sec if I squirt gas into throat of carb. No obstructions in line and float bowl is full. Does not fire unless fuel squirted into throat in which case starts immediately and runs until fuel consumed. Motor has sat inside (in basmeent) for almost 1 year.

ok, looks like it must be a 1985 since that was the last year for it. (found the sticky links under faq's). Now, unless someone can help me out, I'll try to find a parts diagram that can 'illuminate' my problem.

ok is a 1978. Canadian #'s started higher. Please add this link to the FAQ's in the sticky for canadian inquiries.

found a parts diagram for the choke assembly that showed what I needed for disassembly. Also discovered that the carb is slotted at one of the two mounting bolts to allow for tilting. Turned out low speed jet was full of crud. Soaked for an hour in seafoam and blew out with compressed air from the dollar store. First pull ..... beauty!
