Cannot get lower unit back on after replacing water pump

I recently updated my '65 6hp Evinrude by replacing ignition parts and water pump. Last night I changed the pump and put in new gaskets around the housing. When it came time to reattach the lower unit, I was able to insert the drive shaft, attach the shift linkage, and hook up the water line. However, the lower unit will not go on all the way, it is about 1 inch apart and I have no idea what to do. I can shift between neutral and reverse but not forward in this position. Does anyone have any idea what is keeping the lower unit from sliding all the way on? The drive shaft should be all the way in the powerhead, when I turn the prop the crankshaft turns as well. I really appreciate any help.

at the end of driveshaft is small pin, tjis pin goes into slot in upper part of midsection.
slowly totate griveshaft by turning the prop and it should match.after this will past this slot, turn slowly flywheel to feet driveshaft splines into crankshaft splines

Right now when I turn the prop, the crankshaft turns as well. Does it need to be seated even deeper? I assumed that since both are connected I had already correctly aligned the pin and driveshaft.

this pin should be in the midle of drive shaft.should be placed that both ends sticking out from drive shaft should be egual.
i think this pin didnt pass this slot in upper part of midsection
slowly turn the prop (shift in forward motion)and push up lower unit

in case if you will not be able to instal in this way, next solution istu take out powerhead, put back drive shaft, screw in lower unit to midsection and put back powerhead.but in this way you will need a gasket between poweread and midesction, order or do it by yourself.

by the way did you fit in water tube, that should goes in water pump housing.maybe its blocking lowe unit, and you cant lift it up to screw into midsection
