I have an issue with my mercury 40hp 2 stroke 4 cylinder 1992. it cannot rev over 4000rpm, the propelle is good and the carbs too. i just went for an overall check up and the mecanician found that the stator was failing and replaced it!

But it didn't change anything ! still cant'reach more than 4000 rpm,

my engine does'nt go fine in WOT, it seems to go better if i pull back the throtle a bit..

the thing is: on the flyweel; it is written something like :max spark 33? at cranking speed of 300 rpm , witch is 30? at 5500 rpm. so i used my timing lignt and checked the timing..... it cannot reach more than 27? at cranking speed and the advance adjustement screw is pulled back to maximum .

i think my battery is good because i have 12.56 vdc .

Do you think this is due to a trigger problem or switchbox or something else?

please help me!!! i really want that problem to end!!

Thank's Benjamin (sorry for my english)

i don't think it has a rev limiter because it can revs very high with no charges on fast idle, the problem occures only on high speed, but for now it is very bad : high speed 19 mi/h at about 4000 rpm max on a aluminium princecraft 16.2!! that is very sad!!

The arm on the trigger might need to be adjusted this is in the manual on lync and sync. It tells you how far it should be spaced. I would do the lync and sync in order of the manual it is a lot more percise than the ones I have seen on the site. It does not skip parts or asume you know anything.
