Can't disengage shift linkage...

I recently got a 2004 Mercury 25 hp Bigfoot. I'm trying to remove the lower unit to service the impeller. All 5 bolts are removed and it's in forward gear but it wont drop more than an inch. I've read the shift linkage has to be disengaged below the carb. I'm looking at a mess and i dont know what to take apart? any ideas? I can post more photos.

Here is the manual for your engine:

Scroll down to the component Section Listing and select Lower Unit, Page 6-13 will show you the retainer you have to lift up on, then slide the lower clip as indicated by the arrow.

Thanks Carholme, That link was exactly what I needed. It showed the where the latch was and what to do. Mission Success. The manual that came with the motor had none of the information I needed.

That link is now in my favourites list.
