Ok have a 1970 Mariner, 40hp. serial number 676B 403686. it is a 40BEL motor I think. It was made by Yamaha, the Coils melted when the head gasket blew. I have search and search on the internet and spoke with lots of people, they can't find them anywhere, the merc numbers are 83575M and 83576M. Does anyone know of another coil that will work? Or does anyone know of a place I should try to find them? I also have read that some folks have been able to repair automotive coils by covering them with high temp epoxy. I was thinking about trying that, anyone have a suggestion?

Repaired coils rarely work for very long as moisture has invariably gotten into the windings and will cause corrosion, etc.

I don't know of a coil that will work, but for the most part, a coil is a coil. If this is a magneto type ignition you may find another brand of coil that fits the laminates and make it work. I've used OMC coils in old Mercurys with success...

Your engine is a 40B. The B is for Belgium.
Unfortunately you are correct in that your coils are NLA from Merc and Sierra doesn't have a cross reference.

Here's a link to the parts list at crowley marine.

You might try sending them an email to see if they have a cross ref source.

That is a "bendix type" ignition system and #2 cylinder coil is wound backwards. When engine cyl#1 fires the source coil under flywheel dumps into grey lead to coil so spark jumps to ground, when cyl#2 fires source coil dumps to ground causing plug to fire in reverse. That is one of the reasons for the 2 diodes in harness to coils. If you need diagram on how it works let me know and will post it.
