Trying to resolve tire issue with old trailer.
Have Old tires (609/600-9) on 5 -5.5 hub (Old lug spacing is the problem)
Axle is 1 3/8" straight.

I can find bearings for hubs.
I can NOT find hubs with that lug pattern
I can NOT find and I WANT hubs with 5-4.5 Pattern so as to use standard wheels
I am willing to purchase tires that fit my wheels IF I can purchase and extral wheel and tire assembly as a spare.

So First:
NEED hub that is 1 3/8" straight axle 5-4.5 pattern Then I can purchase wheels any place
so Second:
NEED (if First cant be done) 609/600-9 tires and tubes AND one Wheel tire assembly for 5-5.5 for spare.

Or at some point put on a new axle with easier to find hubs and wheels. You should easily be able to find a 3500lb axle for under $150. It may be nice sometime if you are in the middle of nowhere and have a failure of some sort.

+1
When a goggle search for "609/600-9 tires" returns results with the words "Antique and Vintage Tires" it is time for a new axle.

Just out of curiosity, what is the date code on the tires you currently have?
Further research indicates they are pre 1972.

Ayuh,.... No doubt the simplest, easiest way to up-date an Antique...

Thanks all, and uncle willie I don't know the year code but came off a trailer that was under a free 1984 bayliner bow rider capri 2200. I have restored. Waited on purchaing tires until the end. Amazing that has turned into the hard part.
I want the safety of new replacements. SO. I guess I will need a new axle. Never purchased one before.SO

Where do I start to look and what should I know prior to shoping.
Here I go round three. But I do enjoy rebuilding.

1984 Bayliner Capri 2200 with Volvo Penta (Total Restor)
1975 Challanger Bass Boat with Evinrude 135
Game Fisher John Boat with 18 HP Evinrude (Complete Rebuild)

Start looking Here or Here.
Make sure you get the correct load capacity and the length is correct so it will fit.

I was in the same situation as you with an oddball older axle. I even took it to an RV/Trailer place for help. When they told me "they'd never seen one like that before" I was like forget it! I don't want to be dealing with parts issues every time I need something. I swapped it out for a complete new one from Tractor Supply. Only cost around $150. No brainer.

The first thing I would do is make sure the size tire currently on the trailer is adequate for the weight of the rig (boat and trailer). 600 x 9" sounds a little light ... :cold:

And this may help you sort out the one you need.

How to Measure a Trailer Axle

Thanks to everyone.
I have found the axle at Trailerparts superstore. I am going to check the measurements and place the order $159.00. When I add new tires with wheels. I will have just a little more than the cost of tires only on the old set up.

Not bad for the safety of new system and reliability of finding parts while on the road.
