I have a 1986 Grady Tourney with a 150 v6 vro. I connected a wire that should have been connected to the negative side of battery to the positive side :( . im gonna have to check out what the ground wire was for but essentially I connected 12v to the neg side of some components, I noticed the Temp gauge was going full scale when I did it, thats when I knew something was wrong. But now the tach is reading about 1000 rpm to high when cruising in the harbor(6-8 mph) when I know last year I cruise at 1500 and the tach is reading 2500 to 3000 rpm, impossible, I know my boat. if I bump the throttle up a bit, the reading goes down to 1500 but not for long and it jumps back to 2500 to 3000 again but no change in motor RPM. what could have happened? the REG/Rectifier? Also the temp gauge no longer works after that episode, could have fried that too, Its New this year and did work prior to my %$^% up. Thanks so much guys. BTW The ground wire I connected to pos side wasnt the main engine ground cable.

Hi Old Man. Generally speaking, all grounds end up at the battery and is common to all components...even the engine. What probably happened was the reg/rect got burnt out. This would give you the erronious read outs cause it ain't regulating any more or if it's working at all. Might consider taking it to a wrench for a check out if yer' not into the wrenching part. Don't know as I'd run it until I got it checked out. Could cause other problems in the stator it unchecked.

Keep us posted and don't hesitate to post any other questions you may have. Thanks and Good Luck.

Thanks OBJ I'll change that reg/rec this week, ive read other similar posts and will check for goop at stator and take for a spin in harbor. Think I fried that Temp gauge full scaling it out?

"Coladeral" damage is something you'll have to check out after systems are returned to norm. Electric, specially DC, does do funny things.

Hey! Good Luck ol' Man. Hope things work out to the good. (Betcha "Old Man" don't really fit)

Yea its weird because I took it out for a quick shakedown and the tach works perfectly at cruising speeds and when I give enough throttle, but at "harbor throttle" its 1k to 1.5 k to high. Thanks for the help, I shouldnt have these problems coming from a guy who went to electronics school and works on heavy duty trucks for a livin' (go figure). The ground wire was actually orange and butt connected to a black up under gunwhale. 2nd season boater! Marine engines looked weird to me b4 but components are starting to look familiar every time I open the cowl.
P.S- Old Man was my grandfathers nickname, and the name of my vessel, he was a boater /fisherman for many years. Thanks so much again.

What are the chances of the stator goin bad from this? Are they a reliable and durable part or sensative to this error? Is the rectifier underneath the flywheel,I couldnt find it?

Thanks OBJ for yur help, sendin it to shop,Mech said 1-2 hours labor so Id rather go that route than encounter some of the probs Ive read about pullin the flywheel. For anyone else having similar problem, the rec/reg is located under the flywheel and is about 200 bucks, its not the triangular shaped style component, its square.Part # turned out to be 395204 or original #583268. Again the motor is a 1986 150 HP VRO Johnson.
