Can't find starter

Hello, I'm a certified newbie here! This looks like a great place with a wealth of information.

I recently bought my first boat: a 14ft aluminum with a 1969 Merc 20HP. The motor needs a new starter, but I can't find one anywhere. I was told the starter was offered as a kit, and is no longer made. Are there any rebuild kits, or other model starters that will work? The engine serial # is 2732946

Thanks, Matt

Your only option is to have the one on the engine repaired or find a donor off anouther engine

Re: Can't find starter

Is there a starter on it now? Why does it need a new one?

Three out of five problems diagnosed as "needs a new starter" are problems with wiring. If you have a starter on her go to the Engine FAQs and do the starter circuit troubleshooting in "Outboard won't start".

If it really is a bad starter, take it to an automotive starter repair shop and get it rebuilt for under $100.

If it doesn't have a starter try www.tcoutboard.com. They dismantle outboards and probably have a lot of them.

Alright, thanks for the advice. I took it to a starter rebuilding shop. There going to see if any brushes are still available. I'm sure it is the starter, as the brushes are completely worn out.

I guess 40 years on a set of brushes is pretty good.
If brushes aren't available I'm sure something close could be adapted.
I've done it a number of times over the years.

Re: Can't find starter

Just walked away from a 70hp. 1982 that was hanging on a boat I just bought. Starter was so good it ruined the bendix drive. Motor started but will not invest in anything in it as it might be a money pit and I dont need it. Sure wish there was some way I could give parts away for this motor instead of putting it on the street or making it a reef!!! Starter nbr is 50-65436 mfg. 03-22-82. GEE, even have a working CMC power tilt/ trim unit, have to put it on the street. What a shame, wish I could give it away!!! regards FRED
