Can't find the mercruiser serial number on the outdrive

Hi guys,
I've got an older starcraft with the origanal mercruiser sterndrive on it. All I know so far is it does have the eye hook on the top of the outdrive, so that would make it a first Gen?
Now I need to find the serial number for the outdrive and the only number I can find is stamped on the left side of the outdrive way up towards the transom. The small stamp says Mercury Marine 55894. I call it the left side when you are standing directly behind the boat looking at the outdrive. Now my question is, is this the right number? and if not where can I find it?

"lifting eye" on the top makes it an MC-1. Remove the port decal off the upper and the drive serial number will be stamped in the casting (if it's not a replacement upper). You're looking for 7 digits.
