Can't get Gimbal retaining snap ring out of my MC-1. How please?

I am in the process of doing the gimbal and bellows of my MC-1. I can't get a good enough grip on the ring to either pull it tight enough to get something behind the ring and pull it or use the tools I have to do it on their own.

As pictured first I bought the Channel Lock 927 reversible snap ring pliers. Nice tool, reverses with a little lever like the reverse lever on a ratchet. At it's widest open setting necessary to get the pins into the ring holes it just slips out under pressure due to the angle.

Later I bought the 11" needle nose pliers from Pep Boys. As made the tips were a little too fat to get into the holes. A couple of rotations against the fine wheel on my bench grinder resolved that issue but I still can't get a good enough grip.

So far I'm $30.00 into tools that didn't do the job. I probably could have dragged it to the marina and spent not much more for 10 minutes worth of effort with the correct Mercruiser tool I'd only need once.

Any ideas for how I can do this? I'd really like to finish the bellows job this weekend.

Ayuh,.... Donno what it takes,... Anyone I've torn down didn't have it, someone before me threw it away....

Did ya drive the bearing, In, to relieve any possible contact with the snap-ring,..??

Donno if a bluetip wrench could help or not,... lota grease in there...

Driving the bearing in a bit was my first move. Now the bearing is locked. It rotated nice and easy when I ran the alignment tool through it before driving it. I had to use the seal driver because the bearing driver wouldn't make it past the ring itself.

Ahh, the blue tip. I hadn't considered the heat wrench. Using it around aluminum makes me a bit twitchy.

I can get 1 half of it to move (the starboard side) but can't get it moved enough to get a flat blade under it to pry it out the rest of the way. I did make a further modeedafucation to the cheap long needlenose to try and improve the bite. It doesn't slip out until I get a little bit of pull.

Frustrated at the moment.

Ayuh,... Heat the edge, Quickly, 'n tap the Oxy, dead Center the ring....

It'll alter the metallurgy enough to dig the ring out with a pick,... it'll bend or break there...

keep water handy.... The aluminum will take abit of heat, movin' it deeper into itself...
use a wet rag if yer worried...

Unfortunately I don't own oxy acetylene. I might make a tool to do the job. Since the ring is discarder after removal I will only need to do use it once. I have to use the mig to put together my version of the bellows tool. I might make something to insert into the back side of the bellows tool.

I have to use the mig to put together

Ayuh,... Run a bead along the inner circumference, 'n it'll shrink the diameter of the ring...;)
especially if ya throw cold water on it, when still Hot...

That sounds like a working idea. Thanks again.
