I have a Volvo 290 outdrive. During de-winterization I noticed the steering was difficult. I disconnected the linkage and noticed it was definately hard to turn the outdrive manually. So I tried to put grease into the fitting at the pivot point, but the grease wont go in!! I know for sure it needs fresh grease in there, but I dont know what to do now. Any suggestions?? Thank you.

Either the pivot point or the grease fitting is clogged with corrosion. try removing the grease fitting and applying a little heat to the pivot point with a heat gun.

If the steering is not stiff, grease isn't going to help. You will need to remove the steering fork and replace the 2 bushings and V-ring. You will find corrosion on the shaft and behind the bushings in the transom shield. All the corrosion must be removed so the bushings will slip in by hand.

Thanks for the help guys. Both of you were right. I needed heat to free up the grease fitting, but once I got fresh grease in there I learned that it isn't the problem. The outdrive is still very difficult to turn. I'm assuming I will need to remove the outdrive to replace the bushings. I guess I can hopefully fix this leak at the same time. take a look at the video. Copy and paste this address in your browser.

Never EVER run the engine with the drive that high.
Time to pull the upper gear box and check the bellows and the flywheel cover where the bellows attaches. Bet both have problems, if not you are lucky.

The water is coming from the exhaust idle relief ports and is normal.

Jeez, I never knew that. Thanks for the info Don. I never do run it in that position though. I only raised it to get a better shot at the water coming out with the camera and I only ran it for a min or 2 (not in gear). Hopefully it will be ok. But I think I have to pull the drive anyway to replace those bushings. I have a mechanic coming next week to take a look.
