I am trying to remove the impeller on a 6hp Chrysler. I so far removed the foot and the bolts inside the foot holding the impeller kit but the top will not come off. Am I missing something? I would appreciate the help.

Re: can't get impeller out II

There are two parts to the foot that have to come out. The one part I dropped had 1 1/2 inches across and two inches deep to the top. I found the second part underneath that has two bolts and a third one near the intake. The thing wants to come apart now except for the shift shaft that has a bend in it. I can see the impeller but can't lift the thing out.

How can I move the shift shaft?

The entire lower unit should come off as one piece.
Loosen the 4 bolts about 15" from the bottom of the motor.
Drop it down a little, loosen the shift rod coupler, drop the lower unit off.

Remove the 4 bolts from the water pump housing.

Thanks for the reply. But that is where I am at now. See the bend in the shift rod? That bend is below the disconnect screw is. The whole housing can lift out if it weren't for that bend. It's driving me nuts! Is there perhaps a way to disconnect that shaft? I know the directions said to keep it in neutral.

Thanks. But that is where I am now. See the picture you posted? The only thing holding me back is that bend in the shift rod is lower than the disconnect screw. If not for that the whole thing would just slide out.

There is a coupler on the shift rod, just BELOW the z bend in the rod.
Push the rod up as far as you can, you should be able to access the coupler.

That coupler screw is above the bends. Then it goes deep into the gearcase.

No, but it is very close. There is no coupling (#12) and the water pump body (#6) also has the shift rod going through it. I used a flashlight to look all the way down the gearcase and did not see anything at all. I wonder, does it screw in or does it have splines like the top end? I ordered the shop manual for Chrysler motors, but it will be at least ten days before I get it. That is if its fast.

Re: can't get impeller out

There is just one more screw in the foot. If you turn the foot upside down you will see it in line with the shift rod. I did not want to remove it for fear of loosening the gears in the gear case.

The impeller I need has an id of 3/8s and an over all od of about 1.42. Some of the motors require one that is 2.24 over all.

Franz said they run for $36.50 with the S&H at $3.30.

Well, I'm sorry I couldn't help you with the shift rod, don't know how that one is put together.

Yeah, they are expensive. But be glad you were able to find one. Most parts for the small Chryslers are unavailable.

Thank You Roscoe for the help. I will try to get my daughter to take pictures of this for me and post them here. She has one of those digital cameras.

The shift rod un-screws! Now I can get to the impeller which looks good as do the O-rings.
