I have an 89 Evinrude 150 VRO. After a dozen or so weekends of repair and cleanup I put the boat in the water for a test drive. She started right up and idoled great. After a few minutes I tried to put into reverse but couldn't get it in. I tried foward...no luck. I know that I issue is not in the cable. I can see that when we push the the control lever it is trying to move the shift linkage but it won't budge. Any suggestions. I can't find anything in the manual.
Thanks,

Re: Can't get into gear

If you have a control with a warm-up lever, it usually has to be returned to the run position to release the shift lever.

Start with disconnecting the cables from the motor. Then see if the control handle will move. If oit will then the problem is somewhere at the motor. If it still won't move then you problem is frozen cable/cables, or you shift box.

Re: Can't get into gear

Thanks for the replys. I checked the post for 95 Oceanpro. I also removes the cable from the shift linkage. The control cable works fine. The problem seems to be at the engine. The shift linkage just won't move. Shouls I be able to shift with the engine not running? I recall on another boat that I had to replace a shifter interupter switch. It was electronic piece that killed the motor for a split second while you shifted gears. Does this motor have something like that?
Tx,

Re: Can't get into gear

Sometimes they won't shift without the engine running or the prop turning. The shift dog lines up with the gear on top of the ears in the gaer. If you think this migh be your problem try turning the prop and see if it will slip into gear. Also, if you have had the lower unit off you may have the shift linkega hooked up wrong. The top of the shift rod has a bend in it that must face forward.

Re: Can't get into gear

I was out of town for a few days and just got back to the boat this weekend. I still can't get into gear. here is some more backround. The boat sat unused for 2+ years. I have not removed the lower unit. The previous owners never had any issues with getting into gear. After removing the shift cable from the linkage on the engine I tried to move the shift lever. There is a little play but it seems normal. Could something be frozen beacuse of non use? I am really tight on money and would prefer not to bring to machanic. Does any one have any more suggestions?

I would drop the lower unit again and then see if the linkage on the motor will move and see if you can shift the lower unit by pulling the shift rod up and pushing it down. It helps to turn the prop by hand whilt trying to shift the lower unit when off the motor.
