Can't get max Throttle???

Hey,
I just installed a 1976 V4 85 hp Johnson Seahorse on my 16ft aluminum Vhull 1971 Starcraft. I am having real problems with adjusting the throttles though and getting them to where it will run with full power with the throttle wide open. It's as if I am having to fight with the control box even to throttle up as if its grabbing something. This might be a general question but will having too long of cables keep the throttle from working properly, keeping the motor from potentially throttling up all the way? I am a beginner but learning quickly. If anybody has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated! :)

Re: Can't get max Throttle???

I'm no expert but you might want to take the cover off the carbs and check if the butterfly valves are opening all the way (90 degrees). I just post about the same issue on my 55 evinrude and it might be a fuel delivery issue. They say to spray fuel/oil mix down the carbs to diagnose which one is being starved. Other than that if the control box isn't right it won't give you the full throw. cable length may make it stiffer.

Re: Can't get max Throttle???

Also I have been thinking about rebuilding the 2 carbs bec on the bottom carb there was a small pool of gas on top of it obviously dripping down from the top one. I'm guessing it's missing a seal but could this also potetially be adding to the motor not getting fully throttled with full power. I mean this is a light boat with a big motor on it and I'm ready just like any of you to get that thing fired up and "bookin it" across the lakes here in Tennessee so suggestions??

Thanks, those sound like real good ideas that I haven't checked yet. One question is how will you know if one of the carbs is starved when spraying it in there? will it fire up more than what it was doing prior or what?!

Re: Can't get max Throttle???

I'm still waiting on a good reply to that on my post. I figure it will have no effect on one but able to achieve proper RPM's when sprayed in the starved cylinder. you can check my post for some info. I'm pretty sure you need to be WOT on a plane but asking if it can be checked on the hose at idle (Doubtful!! WOT is much more demanding on the whole system than idling on the hose w/ no back pressure!!!
