The original tach in the boat wasnt reading, just stayed at about 1000 when running. Hooked up my OTC voltmeter that has an rpm reading and the wiring checked good, followed engine speed pretty accurately. Went to oreillys, got a tach and it does the same thing except it stays running at about a 100. It has the setting for 4/6/8 cylinder, but I'm guessing I need a special marine tach??

What are you working on? If it is an outboard then yes you need a tach made for outboards.

If it's an outboard, on the back of the original tach there may be a dial to set poles. Need to make sure that it's set correctly.

Did that, no change at any setting. I read the instructions on the tach I got at oreillys. NOT MEANT FOR 2 CYCLE ENGINES.

You need a "universal" tachometer with a 6p setting on the back of the gauge.

Re: Cant get tach to work

The reason I asked about the motor side of the tach wire is on my 69 60hp it went to the coil from factory. I don't know when they stopped doing that but if it goes to the coil you will get a reading, but an outboard tach will not read it properly.
