Can't remove flywheel nut on 85hp force

The flywheel nut on my force outboard is completely locked up. When I tap on it with my visegrips and hammer (poor man's impact) the taper moves as well which I'm assuming means the woodruff key is broken also. Do you have any suggestions on how to remove this? Will heating up the nut with a torch work? Is there a proper procedure for this? Thank you for any help or suggestions you can give me!

If the taper is moving that means the crank is turning. The key is still in place.
If the taper was moving and not the crank then the crank is broken at the top?
You need a BIG breaker bar. Then a BIG screwdriver. The starter bendix. Turn it so it engages the flywheel. Then put the screwdriver betwen the bendix and the teeth on the flywheel.
Then try undoing the nut.Adding a pipe to the breaker bar might help.
Don't force too much and do damage to the bendix/flywheel.
Maybe run it by a shop that has a compressor. Take the right 1/2in drive socket.
There is 95# of tourqe on the nut.
Heating the nut/taper can melt the top crank seal.

Oh yea welcome!

Re: Can't remove flywheel nut on 85hp force

Use a pneumatic impact wrench and it will come off quickly...been there and done that... I like it better then using long pipes and long screw drivers and wrenches logged into teeth and motor casings for leverage. It only takes one time to break some post or engine casting to make a good engine trash. Just find somebody with an impact wrench and problems solved... But once you get the nut off, then the fun begins with removing the flywheel. You will need a really good wheel/gear puller and some grade eight bolts to remove the flywheel as well. And again, a good pneumatic impact wrench works for that effort well also. The tapered joint between the crankshaft and the flywheel holds very well and it takes a lot of force to break it loose... Let us know how everything works out... :)

Do you have access to a 1/2" air impact wrench? If not, as Jerry said, go to a tire shop or garage and have them spin it off.
Then you get to have FUN removing the flywheel.!
There are several posts on these subjects here on the forum. Research, read, read, and you shall find......

....and what gm280 said....
Soak the nut with some type of penetrating spray for a couple days....might help.

Re: Can't remove flywheel nut on 85hp force

Well I appreciate all of the responses guys. I work at a body shop so I have access to an impacct wrench at work. I'm removing the flywheel to replace the stator. I'm just concerned because when I hold the flywheel stationary and tap on the nut both the nut and shaft move together. How can I keep that shaft from moving so that I can free that bolt up? I can keep the flywheel from moving I just can't keep the shaft from moving. Once again thanks for all of your help.

If you hit with the impact, it'll spin the nut off so quick that the shaft won't turn (hopefully). Just make sure you use a 1/2 inch drive impact gun set on maximum power and you probably won't even have to hold the flywheel.

Shaft turns and not the flywheel=sheared key. Flywheel will probably just lift off. Put it in gear and hold the prop.

 Treading lightly here but an earlier post/pic with pieces of flywheel came to mind.

Sounds like a sheared flywheel key. Try the impact wrench approach but make sure all the spark plug wires are disconnected and the lanyard or kill switch is activated to prevent inadvertent starting which can be very dangerous. If the crankshaft continues to spin with the impact wrench come up with something to prevent the crankshaft from spinning like locking the prop with a piece of wood or holding down a piston or two.
