Hi: I'm trying to replace the water pump impeller on my outboard. Johnson CJ30RLCOA 30 hp. Lower end bolts come out fine and drops about 3/8" but I have no clue how to disconnect the shifter and remove the lower end completely. So at this point, I can't see how to remove the lower end. Wonder if anyone has a clear way to do this? Thanks for your assistance. John

Howdy John,
Welcome to iboats!
To get your l.u. off:
Pull the water intake screens off by taking out the 2 screws and be careful not to break them since the screens are plastic.
Next, you'll see the shift shaft connector inside. Take the connector bolts out. YOU'RE NOT FINISHED YET!!!!
Now, the ends of the shift shafts have Tiny little black cone-shaped retainers on them which you must remove. They're really small so don't lose them.
Now she'll come off.:)
Good luck,
JBJ

My manual says to move the shift lever to forward. Then remove the water intake screen on both sides of the lower unit to access the shift rod connector. Hold the lower connector with a 1/2 in open end and turn the upper connector with a second wrench. When the shift rod disengages remove and keep the plastic keeper between the connectors.

do not turn the lower nut, just turn the upper. turning will throw off the shift linkage in the Hub!!!!!! my helper did that once, hour 1/2 wasted. but he learned.
