cant remove my outdrive

please help !!! i have a 1979 searay 260 with a 5.7 merc. I/O . the problem is that i cannot shift it into forward or reverse and since i cannot get it into forward i cannot remove the drive. i did disconnect the lower shift cable from the bracket at the rear of the engine. i tried to operate it ( the cable ) by hand and it wont budge . how can i get the drive off if i cant shift into forward, thanks alot

With the cable disconnected and the outdrive tilted all the way up, see if you can manually turn the shift shaft - where is connects to the "shoe". You may need to use pliers, or some other tool.

cut the shift cable just behind the gimbal housing and shift it manually into fwd.

take the lower unit apart. the foot that goes into the shoe will drop down, then you can remove the drive. sounds likee its gotta come apart anyway.

thanks for all the tips !!! the boat is stored about 20 miles from where i live , i am gonna try to get down there today, i'll let everyone know how i made out thanks again

thanks to all !!! i did drop the lower unit and the drive came right off . you guys are great , i would have been lost without your advice
