From 1988 150 HP 2 stroke Black Max. Steering cable rod end tip(Teleflex) (with hole for linkage to motor) protrudes 1" out of motor. I disconnected teleflex rack from steering pinion but I can't push the rod through the motor mounting bracket. I wacked it with a hammer and it still won't push through. Is there a c-clip or something holding the rod? The steering froze up on me, which is reason for removing steering cable

Re: Cant remove steering cable rod

Dennis, The cable ends rust into the motor's tilt tube. There is a large nut on the starboard side of the motor's tilt tube, that holds the cable in the tilt tube. If you have removed this nut, and the cable is still stuck, it is corroded.

I would spray the cable end to tilt tube intersection with penetrating oil and put a pipe wrench on the 1" protrusion and "rock" the cable end back and force. If it moves, keep working it with the oil and wrench. It will eventually loosen enough to be removed. Beware that hammering the end of the cable can cause it to mushroom and be hard to fit through the tilt tube. If this fails, you can try a propane torch on the tilt tube. Watch out for gasoline fumes, lest you have a fire or worse....
