Can't seem to find neutral?

So the info on my boat is that i have a 1989 Barretta 185 success with a Volvo Penta (aq131d/sp)

In my push to be on the water for memorial day I have been replacing part after part and finally splashed it yesterday afternoon but had had a small hiccup.

It seems that there is no neutral.... Drive works great and reverse works great but no neutral. Shifter seems a little stiff but does what is needed except for the neutral part. Another thing which may or not be related is that it seems that the neutral saftey switch has been bypassed and so the boat will start no matter where the shifter is positioned.

Any thoughts or advice you could share would be appreciated.

Probably need a new cable from the control to the drive.

Thanks Don, do you really think that it could be my problem if it is still going from reverse to forward? Just trying to be as sure as I can but I sure hope it could be that simple
