cant shift after pump change

i did a massive search but found nothing on this. i did a water pump replacement and all went well, pumps water now, but does not shift into gear. i can hear it rev up, but it doesnt spin. the motor was in neutral when i took off lower unit. i followed the instructions from thehulltruth guide with all the pics. its a 250 turbo 2003 yamaha 2 stroke. any help would be greatly appreciated, i would really love to get her in the water, well moving in the water. ive had her a month now.

did you line up the shift linkage when putting back together?
when pushing together, on that last inch, make sure the shift spline is lined up with the gear before pushing it together.

It's real easfy to bump it into gear while changing the impeller. Can you spin the prop with the LU removed? If not, you have gotten it into gear.
Some motors it's easier to engage the LU while in gear and turning the prop to line up the shaft, but with that motor the control and LU have to be left in neutral. Next time just fasten a couple of bolts to hold it and check it while shifting forward/reverse.

thanks yall for the help. what do you mean by the motor and control have to be in neutral, rick? before i started taking it off i had it in neutral, but in my manual im seeing another spot where i can put it in neutral, maybe. as im sure you can tell i have no expirence in this. im gonna run down to the storage and try to see if all is lined up. thanks again yall

well it was an easy fix. the little spline was not in the tube, i put it in and all is well. she just got back from her maiden voyage and she is ready for the gulf this weekend. thanks yall for the advice. even a flat tire on the way home and waiting for the tire man for an hour didnt dent my smile.

i agree. i downloaded one with all the 2003 models. its a good copy, but doesnt really give you a troubleshooting guide. again thanks yall
