Can't Shift into Neutral or Reverse

2003 40hp 2 stroke Merc outboard on a 17ft. Bass Tracker w/remote shifter. Stopped shifting into neutral and reverse the other night on the lake. Shifts forward just fine. Pretty funny to move the shifter into what reverse should be only to accelerate forward! Popped the motor cover and linkage *seems* fine, but I can see it won't move into neutral or reverse with the shifter, but I can manually move it into both positions, though it seems "stiff" in doing so. Disconnected the cable at the linkage and confirmed with the remote shifter that the cable is moving back and forth. Not sure if this is something I can fix at this point or if it's time for a trip to the dealer. Any thoughts?

If you can move the shifter to reverse position, but the cable does not move the motor linkage into reverse position, then the issue is in the shifter control. Its probably slipping in the control when connected
