Can't shift to throttle only. Button doesn't work.

I have a 1985 Mark Twain Costa Brava with a 260 and Alpha 1. The button on the side of the shifter will not push in to switch to throttle only for start up.

I should say I let my daughter and boyfriend take the boat out and it worked before they took it but not after. The button is sitting at an angle. I think they bent the shaft the button rides on and pushes in.

Has anyone repaired one of these before. I attached a photo of the shifter to identify it.

Re: Can't shift to throttle only. Button doesn't work.

Had mine apart years ago for same problem, but can only vaguely remember what I did. Went to my service manual: Appears to be a Commander Console Mount Control. Here is what it says: (Wish the manuals were still here)
1. Remove the control console cover (looks lika a couple of tabs hold it on)
2. Remove the four screws securing the control module assembly to the console
3. Lift the control module assembly from the console mounting area.
5. Position the control handle into full forward.
6. Pry the throttle‑only button from the control handle.
7. Loosen the control handle set screw several turns out. Slide the control handle off the
splined control shaft.
Don't know if you really have to do 2 & 3

There is a little ball or plug with a spring in there that uncouples the throttle and shift. When you push on the button, the ball or plug moves a pin which unlocks the shift. It looks like the button just presses on the shaft, may just be cocked, and jammed, does not look like there is a shaft to bend. Might also just need to be lubed. Book says a little 2-4-C should do it
. Sorry to be so vague, hope this helps a little. Good luck

Thanks,

I'm going to pull it apart and see what I find. It's kind of iffy trying to start it at idle in neutral.

Re: Can't shift to throttle only. Button doesn't work.

Been poking around, and found this: appears to be your remote handle http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...+ASSEMBLY+(CONSOLE)+(88688A14,+A25,+A26,+A27)
This I believe is the guts: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...ng&inbr=1989&bnbr=40&bdesc=MODULAR+COMPONENTS

That shaft 27 I believe is the shaft that moves when you press the button, and what happens is that it lets the spring move that shaft and ball over and unlocks that 21 gear (that moves the shift arm) from the handle shaft, and lets you use throttle, without moving shift. Anyway I used to know how it worked  but the diagrams should help. Good luck.
