just bought a new (to me) used lower unit for my 97 90hp merc. I'm just getting started on the replacement. However, I can't seem to turn the shift shaft by hand. (Or should I even be able to?) Is this because the unit was drained of all fluids for shipping, and is currently not lubed? Or, do I have issues? Should I apply some pressure and attempt to turn it? The only reason it concerns me is that if everything gets put back together, I will not be able to get it in/out of gear.
From what i've been reading on this forum, i think the L/U is in forward gear. I.E. the prop shaft will turn freely in one direction, and ratchet in the oppsite direction.
