Can't use pull rope

Ok, another question I'm sure the answer is easy to. Is there a release button to use the pull start on a 1964 Super Seahorse 40HP. I'm running through a checklist of things I need to know about it, and realized on the water is not the place to learn to pull start the motor. I go to pull the rope and it sounds like it is hitting something, maybe a release button or something?

Does he motor have a recoil pull starter on it or are you wrapping a rope around the flywheel? There is probably a lockout so you cannot start the motor in gear make sure that is working correctly and make sure it is in neutral. otherwise you just need to poke around until you find what is stopping it from turning

It looks from the parts diagram as though there is a lock.

Parts~33-41 on page 4 HERE

Links I think to the cam follower on the carb see pages 12 and 13.

Re: Can't use pull rope

Vic, you are correct. It sits right next to the pull rope, however, it doesn't disengage by shifiting it. It does move a little with the throttle, however, it still does not disengage. If I pull it up by hand, I can pull the rope. There has to be some way to make it disengage and stay that way. Can't see them making a person hold the lock up at the same time trying to pull the rope.

Re: Can't use pull rope

So adjust the thing already. It should allow pulling the rope when the throttle is advanced as far as it will go---In Neutral. Put it in gear and advance the throttle any further and it should lock, preventing pulling the rope. You adjust it by loosening the setscrew and moving the little barrel up or down on the lockout rod.

Why is it there?? Because if you were to pull start the motor while in gear and with an advanced throttle, you are pretty sure to wind up in the water. It gets really ugly when the boat goes around in a circle and comes back to run over you to finish you off.

Does this have anything to do with the previous post and moving the throttle, I thought it was a linkage out of adjustment, F_R just nailed it, love them 40's.

No, has more to do with the fact I have never had a boat that wasn't a tiller. I adjusted it and it works as advertised. Thanks for the help eveyone.

Oh, the other one wasn't out of adjustment. I put in forward, spun the prop by hand, and the throttle worked as advertised.
