Canvas screen replacement?

Quick question before I just go and have the canvas man do it for me... the rough quote of $150 has me trying to save some money, however, and it will be off the boat for a week or more.

I need to replace the screen in the aft curtain of my camper canvas. It seems to be held in with only one line of stitching, and I'm pretty sure I can rip that out easily. I could then get some fabric screen pretty cheap and HD or Lowes and try to fix it myself.

The question is how to re-stitch it. We have smallish sewing machine but I'm not sure it can punch through a total of three layers of sunbrella, plus one layer of fairly heavy duty eisenglass.

Anyone ever try this? Is there a setup that I should use, or a heavy duty needle, or what? What type of thread do I use and where do I get it?

Did you wreck you wife's sewing machine (which is my real worry)?

Frankly, I think I'm gonna end up having it done. Safer for my marriage. :)

Re: Canvas screen replacement?

$150 to replace the screen is too much. Find another upholsterer. I run an upholstery shop and to replace the screen on a single curtain should rund about $40-$50...tops. Don't try it on your home machine. It probably won't destroy it, but once the needle gets to all the material and eisenglass, it will throw the maching out of time and that's another $50-$75 repair bill.

Take your stuff to a new upholstery shop and get a better quote.
