Re: cap installation

The cap of the hull is normally laid in place with a bead of 3m 4200 and then using screws or rivets it is attached. It is not bonded with any resins (polyester or epoxy) at any point.

Silicone will fail and their are other alternatives...... 3m 4200

Re: cap installation

When I removed the cap it was bonded with thickened resin at the transom and under the bowrider to the floor,it had nothing around the rub rail, just screws.will try 4200,thanks for the reply

Re: cap installation

You could go with rivets/ screws without any sealer at all. (like the factory did) Or you could go with rivets/ screws with 4200 to make the joint a little stronger and water tight. You could also bond it together with epoxy. I have seen that done on boats that have damage at the shoebox joint under the rubrail. I think epoxy is a bit of overkill unless it is needed.

Tip; Go to the home center and buy some off the shelf aluminum strips about 1/2 wide. Use epoxy to bond those strips inside the perimeter of the joint. When the cap goes back on, you will have a solid flange to rivet to through the old holes. I use 5 minute epoxy and some clamps to hold them in place until they bonded.
