Cape Ann is a fishing paradise from May through October when the ocean off our island comes alive. We have some of the riches fishing grounds in the world. There is the Stellwagon Bank area just twelve miles from shore, known for its whale watching and dolphins, giant bluefin tuna fishing, sharks, bottom fishing for cod and haddock. There is also Jefferies Ledge which starts just off of Rockport Massachusetts. Our inner and outer harbor sustains a multitude of different species of juvenile fish which attract striped bass and bluefish.
Yesterday morning was a great day to be on the water fishing for striped bass. As we headed out of the harbor we put our mackerel rigs into the water and started to jig up some mackerel to live line for bass. After catching a dozen or so mac's we headed out a couple of miles to troll for bass. In a hour and a half of fishing we landed five fish all over 38 inches in length. That is considered an exceptional morning of fishing. The person with me landed four of the five fish, the only reason for him not reeling in all five is that we had a double hook up so that gave me the opprutunity to reel the last one.
Of the five fish caught the person fishing kept one for the table and we relased the other four fish.
