I know this aint the favorite boat around here but I got a question about it. lol

I have a chance to get a Capri for $400 with trailer, no motor. I have an 85 HP force that I would put on it. Would this be enough motor, the motor that was on the boat was a 115 mercury. I would hate to buy and not be able to push it!:(

What size Capri?? BL is renowned for selling under powered crafts. Sooooooooooo going backwards in power doesn't seem like a good go......................but it will get you on the water.

I believe it is a 16.5 foot. I know downsizing isnt the best thing, just they want to much with the motor, and the fact I have one. They claim the merc runs but the last tag on the boat is 2005. O well Thanks

Well just to wade in here...I've got a (90') Capri and I've no complaints whatsoever so I'm not completely sure about the unpopular bit.
I think the early-mid 80's Bayliners succumbed to floor problems. Fortunately mine has survived sound and intact...and it's a great looking boat for a '90.:)
What year is the Capri you are looking at? The Capri came in many lengths starting at 16' and going up to 20'.
On the smaller capris they spec'd a 50-70hp then increased the motor size up through the larger boats up to 150hp in the outboards.
Make sure the floor is solid whatever you do. If it's solid the 85hp would move it along respectfully.
Check out some of the posts under Bayliner and Force and you'll get a better idea as to what you'll end up with performance wise, etc.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Re: Capri Bayliner

Ill agree with the above post, i have an early 16 ft 80s capri and shes sound. She was babied by the previous owner and lived indoors all the time, well unless she was on the water. My FORCE 85 pushes her about 35 to 38 MPH with low compression and i have no problems skiing and tubing from it. However; with that being said, make sure you check the transom and deck for rot. These early 80s bayliners are notorious for rot, not becuase of poor craftmanship but because they are entry level boats and the majority of the owners didnt know how to take care of them properly. Ill quote TD here, "There is no such thing as a bad boat, just bad owners." The price tag for me kinda suggests rot, imo. Good luck and tell us what you decide.

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame. You walk all over the deck, that a mallot, or hammer with wooden handle, using handle, tap all over the transom, a shape rap is good solid base, a thud, is questionable base.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. (This part for outboard motors Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,)
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.

A 30 year old boat motor combo, may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.

Re: Capri Bayliner

I have an 85 Capri with an 85 hp Force on it. It gets up to 40MPH with me and a bunch of fishing stuff on board. I would check it for corroded fasteners and soft floor otherwise, they are pretty much bullet proof. There are tons of stuff like windows, ski platforms etc on ebay if you need them. For that price, I would take it.

Regards,

John

Re: Capri Bayliner

I spent about 40 minutes yesterday looking it over and found one place where there is a little rot.:( The center isle has an opening cover type thing that is for storage I would guess. If facing the bow from the back the rot is is the rear left hand side of this opening. It is not real bad I peeled up some of the glass and it runs to about the start of the seat area. I have a good idea of rot as I am redoing mt stringers-deck in my 1970 glastron right now. I jumped up and down all over else where and NO flex at all. I think I will go look again, I was set on no but now I am questioning my decision.

Re: Capri Bayliner

That area of the boat is notoriaous for rot, not so much from weather but thats the side that swimmers usually board from. Mine had the same issue and the previous owner had it redone. The stringers and everything were sound in mine so you might be ok, good luck.

Yeah beside that little area this boat seems solid! when I said I jumped around I am a pretty big guy at 230 so any other rot is sure to rear its ugly head. lol I took some pics on the camera phone but I cant get them to my PC. When I go back I will take the digital and post a pic of her.

Re: Capri Bayliner

Point out the rot, offer 250 and walk away if no go. I bought a 17 footer cobia with a 70 hp and a galvanized trailer for 350.00. Im doing a temp floor right now. not even 70 dollars on it and it is ready to go just for except of a few details.
