Captain's call exhaust question

Hi all,

I need some advice about my exhaust. I bought a 2002 Chaparral 265 SSI last year. I was having problems with overheating of the exhaust due to the common problem of wear in the seawater pump. I know that I overheated the exhaust system on at least a few occasions. I just put in a new Hardin pump to correct the priming issue but I am concerned with the diverters and rubber connections surrounding the Corsa switchable exhaust. I have evidence that the exhaust got very hot in the form of partially melted wire looms in close proximity to the risers and diverter assembly.

What I don't know is whether or not I need to rebuild the diverters and replace the rubber connections to the riser, "Y" pipe, and side exhaust elbow. I do get some drips from around the rubber and can't seem to tighten the clamps enough to stop them but they are minor. If I do need to perform these repairs, do I need gaskets for the riser? What is the easiest procedure to R and R the parts?

Thanks in advance

2002 Chaparral 265 SSI 496 MAG Bravo III with closed cooling and Corsa Captain's call exhaust.

Ayuh,.... New gaskets go on dry, on Clean flat surfaces, yes,...

You'll probably want new rubber boots too,....

Donno how it'll come apart, can't see it from here,....
By pullin' the riser, it oughta come apart easily from there,....

I removed a set of Corsa diverters from my boat. The diverters are all stainless steel and there is no rebuilding. In most all cases they are fine, only thing to look at is do they move correctly when power is applied, and are the screws holding the baffles still there. The boots go on dry, and with them leaking I would replace them.

Thanks to you both, I will order new gaskets and boots before I pull it apart. I will inspect the diverters when I get that far.
Do I get the boots from Merc or Corsa? I'm not sure where to find them since it is not an "engine part"
AllDodge, I have come across diverter kits for between 170 and 200 deer. Are these aimed at people who just like to spend money? (I like to keep mine!)
Thanks again, I love this site!

Don't know what this means, can you clarify

As for the boots, you can get them a lot of places and many manufactures. I have probably 20 of them sitting in a box. Just look for 4 inch exhaust boots

A complete captains call exhaust with diverters, actuators, elbows, tips, etc is way way way more than 170-200. Just the diverters (with actuators) are about 1200.

Sorry, another site I use prohibits money talk. People there say "deer" for bucks or dollars. Kits like this go for about $200.

Thanks, but I'm pretty sure you won't need it unless maybe your in salt water. The ones I took off still look great and there old.

Thanks AllDodge. The boat has been in fresh water for most of its life. Original owner was in Maryland so it MAY have seen some salt. Most everything on the boat does not suggest exposure to a salt environment. So, unless the overheating would damage the diverters, I should be okay.

Agree, the only thig that could be damaged by the heat is the solenoids on them, but you would know that
