You don't take the reluctor off at all. Pull the distributor. In the gear at the bottom will be a roll pin. Knock it out and pull the gear off. Carb cleaner or something of the effect will help clean the varnish off and will make it lots easier. Slide the shaft out of the dist. and you can now change the coil. As Chiltons would say reverse to install.

When your about to take it out mark where the rotor is pointing ,then where the dist enters block mark block and dist housing take hold down bolt out pull dist, then as Ken says little waver ring clip on top of pick-up coil before you put new one in lube dist under pickup and shaft[clean motor oil] Put dist in with rotor mark off a bit as it will turn a bit as the gear contacts cam gear and slides in You might have to pull out turn rotor again to achevie the line up mark for the rotor Just do it till it lines up right might take a couple of trys Then line up bottom housing and block mark , tighten hold down Check timming should be very close if both marks are lined up

And just because the parts test good, DOES NOT mean they are good, it just means they passed the tests. I've had many an ignition module test good that was actually bad. It's so frustrating.

Re: Car guru's

my truck died on me going down the road last fall,no spark i changed the module, cap rotor plugs and wires(it was time for a tune up anyway) fired right up but had a clicking noise so i pulled the cap back off and the metal pickup on rotor fell out. popped the old one back in and nothing. come to find out it had burned through the bottom and was shorting to ground.got different rotor and it ran fine. bad thing is it cost me $100 bucks for a tow bill and i'm a mechanic by trade  caught a bunch a teasing from DW too

Got spark at the right time? Find TDC on #1 cyl, make sure the rotor points to the plug wire going to the #1 cyl.

Ken

Re: Car guru's

Reminds me of the time I was driving home from work one day in my 74 firebird and the car quit so I pulled over. my brother in law was following me (we worked together) and we messed under the hood for a minute to see if anything was loose and found that there was no spark. I let it sit for a few minutes while we discussed it and then tried again and it fired right up. Drove another 5 miles and it stalled and wouldnt start again. sat for a few and it fired. did this for about 20 miles and it quit one more time this time I popped the clutch a few times to try to fire it as I was slowing down and raw gas got past the valves and into the exhaust. I guess it pooled in my cross flow muffler cause it fired after another clutch pop and BOOM that muffler came apart at the seams. I was crossing under an overpass of I-95 and there was a few cars around me. My bro-in-law said they scattered like flies when that thing blew. No one was hurt and they only damage ot the car was the muffler. I guessed it was the control module shorting out when it got hot but when they tested it they said it worked fine. I bought a new one anyway and the car hasnt had another problem.
