I am going to change the oil in my car but it recommends 5W 20, it's a 02 Honda Accord V6, I've been taking it to the dealer all this time and now I want to get back in touch with my car and do it myself. Does anyone have any recommadations of what oil brand, should I stick to what is recommended by the dealer or go with 10W grade, synthetic or regular, and whats a good filter?
What does everyone out there use ?

5W20 any major name brand is fine. They all make good quality oil. Personally, I don't use synthetic. I think it is just more money for no benefit. Some people like it. It certainly won't hurt anything.
For the filter, same thing. They all meet manufacturer specs.
If you change the oil regularly, and don't run it with the drain plug out, you will be in good shape.

Personally I like synthetic blend oil. I have used it for the last ten years with good results.
At first, I did not like the idea of 5W20 motor oil, but it does seem to work well, and get good gas mileage. Any top brand motor oil will work, but I still hate Penzoil. IMHO it is the worst.

agree with wifisher....your answer is as simple as looking in the owners manual. Brand? that's a personal choice. As long as it meets or exceeds the manufacturer's recommendations there is no reason to be concerned. There are some benefit to using synthetic but with routine maintenance that honda engine is going to make it 200k or more so whats the point.

Re: Car Oil ?

Brand is less important than using an oil with the required grade (SE, SJ, whatever....) and within the viscosity range suggested in your owners manual. Oils are a lot better now than 20 or 30 years ago, so don't be afraid to use 5W20 if that's what is suggested, especially if your engine is in good shape and not consuming oil. I believe that 0W oil is put in some new cars. Don't get hung up on brand, and syn. vs non syn vs syn blend is totally your call.

Re: Car Oil ?

If you do not keep up on oil changes then I personally would recommend synthetic with a decent filter. I use full synthetic for my car but not for anything else. My goal is for the motor too keep running while the rest of the car falls apart!! It's a Ford Focus so that shouldn't be that hard to do.

As stated any oil that meets the manufacturers specifications will do a great job. I don't recommend premium oil filters but I do stay away from the ones with low(er) filtration efficiency (like fram basic). I'd bet you can do full synthetic with a good filter for around the same price as the shop charges for the base stuff.

I serviced my wife's Honda Accord for 15+ years, these engines seem to be easy on the oil, don't get real dirty or burn any. Walmart has lots of oils and filters at good prices. Stick with the 5W20, most any brand is O.K., but all I've ever used is Castrol GTX with great results...put 347,000 miles on my Olds 403, still running fine when I sold it! Good Luck!

I got a 98 Dodge truck with 181K and I'm too old and I don't want to get in touch with it any more...at least not the oily part, I take it to Jiffy Lube and put syn in it. But I just put a new coil on it myself, so there goes my plan ;)) It still drives great.
