I was changing the front passenger tire. Had the front jacked up and in park also the hand brake was set. Had the lug nuts loosen and was about to take the tire off the hub and the car started to roll back about 4 or 5 inches, scare the s--t out of me as I saw the jack about to fall off. it then stop and the front was supported by the tire (croocked/sideway). Quickly move the jack to a new spot about 2 inches forward and start to jack the car up again. The car was in my drive way and the drive way is flat, not sure why it happen but that teaches me a lesson to choke the back tire next time to stop the roll.

You unloaded the differential when you jacked up the front tire"if its a front wheel drive" and your ebrake does not work.

Re: car roll back when changing tire.

Glad you were not hurt. A valuable lesson.....imagine that happening at night on the side of a road. So you stashed some wood blocks to be used as emergency chocks in your trunk.......OR you know to go hunting for good size rocks to chock the wheel in case of an emergency tire change.

The other thing to consider is you change the weight distribution when you jack the car up and the geometry of the jack changes since it really is lifting at an angle that increases with height.

some cars come with chocks in the jack kit. i know because i sat on the side of the road for 10 mins trying to work out what to do with the angled piece of metal in the jack kit i thought it might be something you had to install as a jacking point so i had to read the manual to find out its a wheel chock lol
