I have a 2003 Chevy Z-71 just out of warranty with a blown speaker in one of the front doors. Went and bought a pair of speakers just gonna replace both. When I got the door panel off I come to find that the OEM speaker has a moulded plastic mount thats glued to it and it just snaps in the door. When I positioned the new speaker in the door theres nowhere really to drill any holes for mounting screws.

Is there anyone here that can point me in the proper direction to do this thing right?? I've found wiring harnesses but no mounting adapters. Any help is appreciated

Car stereos aint what they use to be...

i use crutchfield's site to research and then buy cheaper elsewhere....thanks crutchfield!

check this: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-AkB1FhoycF9/installguide/legend.html it says that you might have to re-drill holes or use a mounting adaptor (front speakers for tahoe's are a difficulty level of 'P' according to them).

can you re-use the mount from the original speaker? if not, i'd swing by a stereo shop and ask them what they use. they probably sell it.

Another thought is to make a larger plate that you can attach to the door and mount your speaker in it.

Hey Ef.

I have an 04 Silverado so know exactly what you're talking about. The 6.5" speakers won't fit the holes in the door. You need to get a set of the 6.5" oversised, or 6.75" speakers, and drill holes for the screws. I have a set of the 6.75" Sony Xplod's in my front doors and they sound great. Also have an Alpine V-drive head unit pushing them, and a Punch 400A4 amp, bridged to 200X2 pushing a pair of 8" Punch subs in tubes under the back seat. Really nice full sound all around, but it won't knock out your dental fillings or the windows in your house when you get home. Last truck was an S-10 with a pair of 12's in the extended cab powered by a punch 700s (350X2). That one was a little louder..... :D

Anyway.... A set of 6.75" speakers will fit those openings. Just be careful when you position them to drill the mounting holes, the speaker holes in the doors are just small enough to have enough metal to grab the screws, if you don't center it exactly you might miss the metal on a hole.

Another option is to cut the plastic mounts away from the stock speakers and reuse them, but I didn't try that.

Re: Car Stereo Guru's....

Hey all, Thanks for the info. I found a website that has some mounting adapters for an 02 they arne't but $14 for a set so I'm going to give them a try. If they dont work out I won't be like I'm out a bunch of cash. This site also has the wiring harnesses that I was looking for too. I'll keep yall posted on how it goes.

The first major hurdle has been crossed ! ! ! That was getting the @*^%!$ front door panel off. That took a couple hours cause I went real slow doing it didn't want to break anything. Now, when I go back in it won't take 5 minutes to get it off. The next major hurdle will be getting the rear suicide door panels off.....if anyone has any wisdom regarding that I'd certainly appreciate it.

Re: Car Stereo Guru's....

I bought the tool but there weren't any clips holding the front door panels on. There were only 3 screws to take and and the panel just lifted off the door. It was really slick. But the rear door panels must me made differently. We still haven't gotten them off.

Anybody got any other suggestions?

Ef, this takes some guts but like I said I have a 2004 and I've done this before.

I think there may be one or two screws in the cupholders. Look around. Once you're sure you see no screws anywhere (there may be none, I'm not 100% sure, bad memory...) all you do is pull/pry it off. It uses metal spring clips around the perimeter that set in small holes in the metal door frame. The entire panel just pops off in one piece. Just pull. Might take some coaxing for the first one or two, then it's easy. If anything use a pry bar or screwdriver in an inconspicuous spot like the bottom rear edge to get started.

Have fun!!
