What is the difference mechanically from a car fuel pump 1962 Chevy II vs a boat pump for a merc 140 HP. The engines are basically the same ( chevy II is inline 4 cyc 154 CID and boat is inline 4 cyc 181 CID)
The car version cost only $24 but I hear boat version are a lot more $150? What do I risk if I install the car version?

almost anything you bolt to a marine engine needs to be marine rated. Insurance issues aside if there is any type of accident. Anything relating to fuel, electicity, or sparks is enginered to mitigate any errant sparks or fuel spillage resulting in a catastophic explosion on the water.

I am not sure on the actual differences for the fuel pump, but I am sure there are differneces in the way it handles internal failures as to where is routes fuel in that regard.

in short
DON'T CHANCE IT

Most marine pumps are duel diaphram and some have a vent tube that goes to the carb

I have a single action diaphragm but I think it has gone bad because green residue was built up in the vent tubeon both ends. I can't check the pressure (no gauge). I have re built the carb but I still have engine cut when going from idle to fully open throttle. What else could it be beside the fuel pump?

Unhook your gas line from the carb and stick the end into a plastic gallon milk jug. Have someone turn the boat over and the gas should pulsate and shoot into the jug. Did you clean your tank, filters and syphone valve?

I will measure. I have added water remover and fuel injection cleaner as well as new gas to the tank.. Where is the syphone valve? The only filter I think is right before gas line enters carb and I replaced it with the carb rebuild kit. Is there a filter built into the single action pump that I can clean?

Just a note- the engine seems to hold proper idle and I can throttle up to speed if I do it very slowly without engiine cutoff/bog.

its pretty easy for an auto pump to make you boat look like the death star after luke takes a good jedi shot

the pump is one shot deal and not repiarable

if you dont have a water sepator filter (looks like and oil filter) they will get the water out of the fuel before it gets to your carb and with the new 10% fuel have become even more nessary

sounds like you still have a problem in the accelerator pump circuits in the carb.

If you have h2o in your tank, nothing will change until you get the h2o out of the tank AND your carb.

The automtive fuel pump vents (when the diaphram breaks) to beneath the engine (street)

This means the pump is pumping raw gas into your bilge.

Run the numbers.

DHP

If the pump goes in the vehicle it leaks gas on the ground. The marine pump puts the gas into the clear line instead of squirting it on the engine and bilge if it goes

There is a rebuild kit avaiable for the pump from Mercury. New diaphragm and gaskets. It's not that expensive.

I believe that a marine fuel pump has 2 diaphrams as per a technical support rep from a local dealership.
Chuck

Re: Car Vs. Boat Fuel Pump Difference

Marine fuel pumps vent directly into the intake. If a marine pump fails if will spill fuel into the intake and a automotive pump does not. The vent line is normally clear plastic and if you see fuel in that line then the diaphram is shot.

Bob
