carb adjust 1973 merc 402 40hp

anyone know how to properly adjust carb. when i get wide open throttle adjusted it wont idle. when i adjust for good idle i lose high end and have hesitation on hole shot. all i have messed with is the idle/mixture adjustment screw. what am i doing wrong

Idle mixture screw will not effect WOT as its controlled by a fixed jet, sound like you have carb problem such as dirty or split emulsion tube....

Have you adjusted the mixture screw while the motor is in forward gear under load?
