Got the ole dude together but having hard time getting it started. Have very good spark on both spark plugs but I can't remember the settings on the carb high speed and low speed.

Oh yes chinewalker if you run across this post I apologize for not acknowledging your reply to my piston question but yes, that is the exact same piston which you posted the picture of. As I posted, I found a very good Power Head and purchased it but it had a different cam shaft so I put my old one in it and have it ready to run IF I get the carb adjusted. As stated above, have tons of fire.

Thanks again chinewalker....

Re: carb adjustment on M/W GG9002B 5hp

Just went out and tried it again and all I could get was a big backfire about every 4 or 5 pulls. Guess I have some sort of ignition problem, still have plenty of fire in the plug.

I can forget about starting it now-just broke the rewind spring, think I can fix it though, it broke at the very end and I think I have a small carbide drill to drill a hole in the spring for the loop which is attached to the spring which slips over the pin to secure it.

Recoil springs can be heated and bent to shape.

Are you sure the the wires are on the right cylinder?
Check the flywheel key and the key way.
I have re bent a number of recoil springs successfully for a small engines using a Brenzomatic torch.

Your motor is a 1956, very similar to the 5.5hp motors from Johnson and Evinrude, but not exactly the same. Recoil springs are available right here at iboats, or any Evinrude dealer.

Agree, make sure the wires are on the correct plugs. However, unless the coils have already been replaced, you can bet the farm that they are shot (cracked). Having spark is the Great Deceiver. New ignition parts are also available here at iboats or dealer.

Slow speed needle open about 1-1/2 turns, high speed needle open 3/4 turn as a beginning point. Readjust when warmed up, on a boat, on the lake.

EDIT: I just read your other thread. So, obviously you have inspected the coils, since you have had it all apart. But you mentioned that you left the flywheel nut loose?? You probably sheared the key, which would account for the no start/backfiring. The shaft and flywheel tapers must be clean and dry, and the nut torqued to 40-45 ft pounds. If that locks it up, something is wrong.

Re: carb adjustment on M/W GG9002B 5hp

All I done was change my crankshaft from my powerhead into this almost new PH I purchased and had to change plug wires and it started on the second pull, this is after I fixed the spring which took about 20 min. Now why would I have to put the bottom plug wire on the top and visa versa when all I did was change cranks? Then after doing that, the top plug wire was almost too short to put on the top plug so I purchased a longer plug wire and now I cannot get fire from either plug. Seems like if I had a duck it would drown. And yes, the coils are almost new and look it. Maybe someday I will get ole Betsy purring again, especially with all the knowledge here.
