5.7 Merc / Weber 4 bbl
A friend "rebuilt" my carb so I put it back on and went to make the idle / mixture adjustments. Turned both screws out to 2 1/2 to start, warmed up engine, put in gear at idle. Book says to turn screws in until it bogs, turn out until it does same, and set in the middle. When I turn them in it bogs at about a turn out, but when I turn them out I never see any difference and stop before unscrewing them completely. Is that a symptom of something wrong that means something to you?
So I left them at about 2 turns out, not sure where the "sweet spot" is. Engine does seem to be running rich (smokes a little on start, hard starting after running until sits for awhile). So it appears turning the screws in increases richness, turning out is lean? (first dumb question). But turning out doesn't seem to "lean" it.
Choke seems to be OK, my other thought is vacuum leaks based on reading. Does that sound like a maybe? Not sure how to check that, will do some more researching unless one of you chime in. Thanks.
