I was wondering on my 1979 Evinrude 55 hp 55975C engine what carb adjustments do I have? I'm having trouble getting it to idle good and have walked through the rebuild and gotten the kits and replaced everything that came with it. Still runs rough and am at a lost. I notive that when looking at the carbs there is a intermediate speed screw on the left side, and a screw in the carb in the front for low speed. The high speed seems to work fine. When I rebuilt them, the manual doen't say anyhting about setting these a certain way, do you just snugly tightne them or is thre some set points.

Re: Carb adjustments

Go to the Forum Jump, then Repair & Maintenance, then Engine Frequently Asked Questions and review the carb adjustment procedures by J. Reeves. Invaluable info.

Re: Carb adjustments

Okay after reading another post on fixed jets, since mine is fixed I should make sure all the brass jets are screwed securely in place, and also the screws that are covereing them. Thanks for all the help.

Re: Carb adjustments

Hopefully you did make a note of the small different I.D. size jets, the size that is marked on them and where they came out of. Glancing at them they look identical but they are not.

The side (idle) jet and the top front (off idle) jet look identical but are different in their internal diameter.

Also, the top carburetor jets are different sizes than the bottom jets.

Let me know if you may have mixed these jets up.

Re: Carb adjustments

Thanks joe. I've never take nthe jets out becuase I was afraid I woudl mess them up. Should I take them out or can the standard using a piece of wire work? If its okay and I should take them out when installing it says they should be screwed in snuggly for hte brass jets, so there woul'dnt be an adjustment once screwed in. You just screw them all the way in and that it. Thanks for the answers, my book just don't explain it well.

Thanks ANDY

Re: Carb adjustments

You'll need to make yourself a jet removal tool (do a search here) to remove them. Often there's gunk stuck in behind the jets, so it's a good idea to remove them. Clean the jets, and clean the passages w/ the jets out.

Re: Carb adjustments

Make sure the jets themselves are clean with a proper size piece of wire.

Gotcha Thasa thanks for the info. it says to take the jets out. When I take take the jets out and put them back in is there a certain number of turns to screw them in, or do you just screw them all the way down until tight.

Thanks and hopefully his is it
