I am new to outboard repair, but really getting<br />"into" it! This forum is the best! I have four outboards, my two new arrivals are a 1955 Johnson Sea Horse 5.5 hp and a 1963 Evinrude Fastwin, 18 H.P. I have been researching the subject of rebuilding carburetors. My question is; after a carb. is rebuilt, is there a cleaner that you can mix (with 2 stroke gas / oil) such as the carb / injector cleaning fluids used with our vehicles? Would these cleaners be detrimental to a 2-stroke engine? <br />Also, does anyone know where I can find parts (gaskets, seals)to rebuild an old OMC fuel tank? I have found the fuel line, but no tank parts...

Re: Carb cleaner

As far as cleaners to add to your fuel.......Seafoam is very popular. It can be added to the fuel, or can be used to decarb the motor. If you have some spare time do a search of this site with the search function on it. Also in the FAQ part of this forum there is a section on decarbing with Seafoam.<br /><br />As far as the tanks......I assume you are talking about the "mile a day" tanks or "cruise a day".....I would think that making your own gaskets will be cheaper than buying them. Maybe someone else has better advice on that.<br /><br />Welcome to the Forum :)

Re: Carb cleaner

DO NOT use ether or starting spray. it has no lubrication, burns to hot, can burn a hole in a piston. if you need starter fluid put premix in a spray bottle and spray in carbs.

Re: Carb cleaner

SeaFoam is an excellent product for fuel system cleaning in any engine -- two or four stroke. I use it in my cars and every tank of fuel in my outboard. For the do-it-yourselfer, any of the spray carb cleaners work well for carb rebuilding. Cans of compressed air can be used to blow out passages if you don't have an air compressor.
