Hi everyone. I have a maxum 27 scr that has a 454/ 4 barrel carb. Engine hours are 380 and runs well. My question is about fuel additives ie: carberator cleaners. Do they work? Are they ok to use ? What brand if they are? I use a spray cleaner for external cleaning and the spark arrestor. Everyone on this site has been very helpfull with my other questions and I thank all in advance.

Re: carb cleaner

Hello, Carb cleaners that pour in the tank are ok to use now and then. The one to use is whatever you seem to perfer at your local auto parts store. Stay away from products containing alcohol. It's not good for the rubber parts in the fuel system like the accelerator pump in the carb. It causes them to swell and dry out. I like to use the properly mixed amount of sta bil when I add gas to my boat. It keeeps the fuel fresh for periods of nonuse and also keeps the fuel system clean.

Just a little Tip........
Carb Cleaner Might clear up some Minor collections of goo...
But, If you're having Fuel Delivery Issues....
Gallons of Carb Cleaner Are NOT going to Fix Anything.....
If your carb is boogered up, Tear it down,+ Clean it.....

I agree with Bondo 100%. If you have idle troubles and bogging it's probably time to pick up a carb kit or drop of your carb to have it rebuilt. Pour in the tank cleaners are good for preventive maintenance but they will not solve much if your are already experiencing these kinds of troubles. If you are looking however just to keep the fuel system clean in between tune ups grab a can of cleaner and pour away!

Re: carb cleaner

Max,for cleaning the arrestorI usually take it off and place it in my garbage pail(usually sitting on a bag filled with paper garbage products)And spray it with either brake cleaner or carb cleaner, which ever is on sale that day.Either will clean it well.As far as additives,if it is running well as you say ,I recommend adding seafoam on occasion. It will help to keep things clean and it is designed for marine use.DONT USE DRY GAS!!!!Changing out the carb filter and the fuel water seperator will keep things going well.Charlie

Re: carb cleaner

The best carb cleaner/fuel addative Ive seen is called Seafoam. You have to go to a good auto parts store not Pep Boys they will not carry this.Is there a NAPA close to you? They carry this and you can add it to your gas or oil it really works great for keeping the carbon off of the venturis in the carb.Ive used it for years.
