Hello, folks. I sure hope someone can give me a piece of advice about the carb on my 3.5 merc. I bought the machine new, but I have had endless troubles with it. A mercury tech told me the carb jets are very small, and microscopic particles in the gas can plug them. He advised me to clean the carb myself rather that travel the 400 km round trip to get it cleaned from him every time it needs it (which is about every time I use the motor). Yes, I know I must have dirty gas, but I bought a new gas can and use brand new gas, so what more can I do? Anyway, it seems the high rpm jet must be blocked yet again. My question: do I need to remove the carb completely, and blow it out? This sometimes works for me. I would need to do this on the lake every time I use it, or take it home with yet another ruined day of fishing. Where is the high rpm jet? There is one brass needle screw with some holes in it, and then one more pewter-colored screw that just seems to drain the bottom of the carb. Help, please, someone? I live far from any community, so I need to do this myself. Oh, how I wish I'd bought a junker kicker at a garage sale, and not this thousand-dollar piece of junk. Thank you.

Has anyone else found the Mercury 3.5 horse 4-stroke to be a useless waste of money because of the tiny jets that always plug up??????

The only advice I could offer would be to make sure you put a fuel filter inline to the engine or a fuel/water seperator. If the fuel line is old replace it; it can start to break down inside and clog up the carb. Also put marine Sta-bil or Startron in your gas whenever you fill up.

Have you tried running the engine until it's completely out of gas? I have found that to be effective in cleaning everything out.

After 5 years, it's probably run out of gas more than once. That's how old this thread is.
