I don't normally soak carbs unless they are packed full of junk. I use spray carb cleaner and compressed air. Make sure to remove all jets and clean all passages and blow out with compressed air. Install new carb kits when you rebuild.

Werkelly's,

Yes, I agree with Daviet with the carb rebuilding. For myself, I failed to remove my jets and blow the passageways out but I did clean the carbs just didn't go the extra step in removing and blowing out my jets and passageways the jets fit into. I also, did not clean 1 of my jets at all on three of my carbs on my J70ELCTE outboard which I will do when I get done with my deployment in the military but that will not be until January 2010. Take care and let me know how your carb build goes and turns out. Take care, Bob:)

If you don't do a good job you will be doing it again.
Remove all the jets, float and needle, gaskets etc. Use the Gunk cleaning kit, 1 gallon can , and soak the carbs, jets etc.
Spray cleaner is for the outside of carbs and will not break the brown shellac that we get from the rotten fuel we buy. Follow the instructions on the can and use compressed air to blow everything dry. Fit new kits and flange gaskets.
Always use Stabil in your fuel as this will help the fuel to stay fresh and prevent shelac build up.
Remember if a carb does not deliver fuel there is no lubrication and a blown motor.
I also use my ultra sonic cleaner as insurance.

If they have sat for that long, I would install new kits. Usually, disassembly and carb cleaning spray and compressed air will be enough. If they are gunked, a vat may be required. You ill know when you pull them...

Clean thoroughly and blow out everything with compressed air. Use new kits.

Now anyone that has let their boat sit for 12 years has more than carb problems!!!!:D And don't use the W_rK word, either!

Seriously,
I agree with the soak and new kits after sitting that long. Also, you can almost be guaranteed that the water pump impeller has taken a set after 12 years. Don't blow your engine because you failed to put a new impeller in it. Change it now!
Good luck,

After 12 years of no use, the varnish in the carbs is going to be stuck on and hardened. It will need a good soak in cleaner to break it free and a close inspection to assure that.

Carb cleaner spray does a fair job of breaking up varnished up parts if the varnish is still gooey or there is a dirt issue. It's not made to clean out old hardened varnish... Even after "vat" cleaning a good carb cleaner works well to clean out any residual cleaner not rinsed out/blown out.

I can almost guarantee you will be doing this carb job over if not done right to begin with. Who is it that PS's their post with "If you don't do it right the first time, will you have the time to do it right the second time?"

Half a_ _ repairs are not worth the effort. If you took it to a repair shop you would expect it done right not "blown out". When it doesn't run right after the bill is paid, who do you whine and complain to? Soak time is free, labor is not.

Seriously, why even balk at this.... and yes, you will need new kits. The gaskets/seals get hard just as the varnish does. BTW... as long as you're at it, better be looking at fuel lines, filters and pumps and engine insides (like reeds and piston rings). Also new lower unit oil, a pressure check and a new water pump impeller. All good ideas for fun and worry free boating enjoyment. ;)

Re: carb cleaning to vat or not to vat

Thanks for all the great advice
no work ws not the only reason the boat was a christmas present 14 yrs ago we used it a couple years and then we moved and moved and you get the picture it was in a barn at my moms
I will be replacing the floor eventually (has soft spots ) and I did just buy the entire water pump kit and I will be putting that in a compression test will soon follow the carb overhaul
I will give the marine store a try for the carb kits are there any specific info on the carbs that they will need or is the model sufficient?
keep the great advice coming see ya'll on the water
