I have a Volvo Penta 5.0 fl with a Holly carb. the male/female fitting on the carb keeps backing off causing a small leak, what I would like to do is cut the fuel line and put a 2 inch rubber line in place to soak up any vibration. I have done this many time's on hot rods to help stop fuel line issues. Could someone tell me if this is common practice for watercraft? If not I will pull the carb clean the fitting and use some thread lock or teflon tape. thanks for the help

I can tell you that it is not common on automotive or marine for that fitting to back off. Shouldn't need thread lock. You really have to torque that fitting down. And when loosening the fitting for removal it absolutely requires that you back it up with a large wrench on the big fitting that mounts in the carb that the fuel line fitting screws into, otherwise the fitting and line will twist and chances for it lining up again are worse.

You may have a component failure. If the flare on the end of the fuel line is cracked then it will not hold the torque and leak. If the flare nut itself is cracked then same thing. If the line has been twisted ever so slightly when removing without using the backup wrench then it could be warped just enough to cause your problem.

I went thru this on the first Holley dual feed carb I installed, more experienced Holley guys tolds me to not be afraid to really put the whank to it, never a problem since on any of them. Just be sure to back up the flare nut wrench with the other fitting, especially when removing. Also be sure the thin metal gasket is installed with the larger fitting that goes into the carb. Has to be metal to take the torque required.

Re: Carb fitting

are you missing the gasket between the fitting and the carb body?

Don't cut the lines or anything crazy like that. pull it apart, make sure you have the gasket, clean up the threads and put a dab of perfect seal on the threads and put it back together.

Re: Carb fitting

First, I would like to say thanks

Up date: We Backed off the small fitting with the flair, no crack removed the large fitting that is in the carb, looked for and found gasket, put three to four wraps of the white tefflon tape on the thread, reassembled, useing a real wrench on that bad boy to tighten down. All looks to be dry and no more wet to the touch feel. With school starting and the weather soon to cooling down were sure to be slowing down on the boat useage. but don't worry I will still watch, read, and listen to all of you. The folks here have made for one hell of a summer for my son(14) and my neighbor, who is 70 plus! The amount of money I have saved!!!!! well It sure helps to keep the tank full! Yea I own the boat, but water and I don't mix. so I stay on shore and only eat what is cleaned!
