Took off the carbs on my '91 120 Force to replace all gaskets. Put the gaskets on but never adjusted the floats.
My engine will not stay idling in the water. It runs for a few seconds then shuts off. After a cranks it won't start again. Could it be the floats? The bottom carb is leaking a lot of fuel.

Check the float valve. Probably stuck open.

/Bear

I forgot: Do not adjust the float level if there isn't a obvious reason to do so.

/Bear

Hey Bear thanks for the info. I will definitely make sure it isn't stuck open. Why do you think it isn't a goodto adjust the float? I have the manual and it seems like a relatively straight forward process.

If you have the manual it's a different story. Check the level and adjust if necessary.

I tried to say that float levels don't change just like that. I there is something wrong with the carb don't start to adjust every jet, screw or lever - deal with the actual problem. In general that is. Since you have the manual and know what you are doing... Didn't know the whole story. Sorry.

Sure hope the float level is right and there is no need for adjustment. Then I still look good. :D

/Bear

Re: Carb Float Adjustment

Thanks again. Yeah when I pulled the carb the first time I jolted the carb around and just thought "oh well". But I assume that I smacked to many things around inside. It will most likely need a rebuild this weekend. Thanks for the advice. These are the things I need to hear before I start ripping things apart. :p

Re: Carb Float Adjustment

Sorry to put this question on someone elses thread, but if my 200hp merc stalls in very low idle, but is fine in neutral, and only after a few hours of running, should i look into my carbs as well?? How hard is it to check for something abnormal? I have never tore down a carb before but i do have the manuel.
