carb float orientation

these pictures are from the factory manual for an 1988 Evinrude 70 hp.

they are on the same page!!!

I was trying to remeber which side of the float goes up!!

they show the float inverted...

I am thinking the flat side goes towards the carb body..and the stepped side goes towards the bowl

even though the picture showing the open height of the float spec show the stepped side towards the carb body!!

which is correct?

yup, other way round shuts the valve too soon -- won't get enough fuel into the bowl.

If you happen to install one upside down, the motor will idle normally and run fine at cruising speed, but misfire after 20 seconds at WOT. I mean exactly 20 seconds -- you can time it with a stopwatch.

don't ask me how I know....... ;)
