Re: carb floats?

The floats regulate the amount of fuel in the carbs. If not adjusted correctly two of the most common problems would be running out of fuel or flooding the engine with too much gas. If you are not getting enough fuel your engine will probably chirp. If too much fuel it would smoke more than usual. I hope this helps. Good Luck.

Re: carb floats?

The problem I'm getting it's a bit hard to start. Semi tilted with garbage can under it I get it to start, smokes a bit too. When we decided to take it to the marina and have it all the way down it did't want to start, also my adjust ment screws are at 2 turns out, this getts it to start, 1 1/2 won't start. Also checked my plugs and they get wet, looks like it's fludding, I'm thinking it's my floats. I made the mistake not to adjust them. Anyone have a detailed procedure on how to adjust the floats? It's a 83 DT 85

Re: carb floats?

I have a '88 dt 85 and the screws should be 11/2 turns out from lightly seated. I believe that is the same for yours but not sure. Did you clean the jets and needles? Did you do a compression check? if you think it's flooding try undoing the gas line and see if it starts. Are all your plugs sparking the same? Are they new plugs? There are a lot of other things to check to narrow your problem down.

Re: carb floats?

I have good spark on all three, have average of 150 psi, I compleatly rebuilt the carbs cleaned everything. Even put new main jets, the only thing I didn't touch was the floats, nor checked to adjust them, my mistake. With the motor slightly tilted I can get it to start.
