After ordering the kits to fix the carbs, the fuel pump, and the impeller. I forgot to get sealant. What kind(s)should I use. I know some of the gaskets don't need anything added, but some do. Is there a gasket between the lower unit and the shaft? The manual I got is not very detailed. Any gotchas with the lower unit removal? 1989 40 Evinrude. Thanks for all the help. Chris

(Watter pump) Make sure you disconnect the shift linkage, and don’t forget the bolt hiding under the steering trim skeg. Easy job.

Carbs should be easy but, I am having troubble with mine so I'll keep my mouth shut.

Mac

Thanks. I also see a rubber fuel hose hanging out of the rear of this motor, what is it for, some sort of vent?

Looking at the picture in the manual, their fuel pump doesnt match mine. I assume my pump(s)(gas and VRO) are located right beside the carbs, I also noticed no air fiter, normal?

I got so much to learn!

Ditto on the shift linkage...it is really the only thing that can trip you up on the lower unit removal. Once you get the lower unit off, don't turn the shift linkage rod as this will adjust it and if adjusted enough you may have shifting issues upon reassembly.

As for gaskets/sealant....you need a sealant around the impeller housing....my local marine advised that they use a product they buy at NAPA. I think it was called something like "Airplane gasket maker/sealent". I used it in the spring of 2003 and it seems to work fine. Comes in a small white bottle with a screw on top/application brush.

Good Luck!

Nope...no air filter. Outboards are water cooled...could the hose your looking at be the exhaust for the water.

Not sure on you motor, but my fuel/oil pump is mounted behind the carbs on the side of the engine block.

Hope that helps.

It was the pisser, and after a cleanout, it pisses like crazy. Previous owner must have replaced the hose, then pushed it through the pisser hole about 16 inches, not a very neat job.

There's a plate that the carb throats are attached to, which also has the fuel/oil pump mounted on it with rubber retainers, sound familiar?

It's starts, runs as long as I keep hitting the key choke every 2 secs. The fuel pump and/or dirty carbs must be the cause

Thanks for all the help!
