carb gasket replacement

Hello. I have a 1987 Johnson GT200. When the bulb is squeezed, there is gas coming from between the bowl and the carb body on 5 of the 6 carbs. For the last 3 years, we have only had ethanol gas to put in boats - this year non ethanol is showing up, both 93 and 85 octane.

I have already (last year) drained the 65 gal built in tank, new fuel lines and bulb, and put a water/fuel canister filter along with 2 inline plastic see thru ones (so I can keep tabs on things, and still have the cleanable filter under the cowl that came with the engine. Added to qts of blue Stabil last Dec along with 50 fresh gallons.

Looks now like I need 6 carb/bowl gaskets...so the questions:

1) looks like the bowls do not just drop, no room so it appears a full pull off. I can take them off it appears (lots of linkage I see) but what of getting them back on and syncing them?
2) Any other parts that should be replaced while I/a service guy is in there?

3) If I have a dealer do it locally, what can I expect as far as a bill regarding labor and parts from him? 100, 200, 300, higher? Some things you are better off to pay to have done, some not. This might be one to pay.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Greg

Re: carb gasket replacement

as far as cost to do it...I would say 200 apiece..conservitive...your best bet is get a OMC manual...not a solec or haynes but a OEM one...you will save many dollars doing it your self....

before you take them apart..take pictures of them so you know what goes where....

get a manual here... http://www.outboardbooks.com buy the kits...the cost of the manual will pay back 10 fold....

I dont know if your bowls are the plastic ones..but seems like they warp in time and had to be replaced with new metal bowls

the manual will get your carbs rebuilt the right way

Re: carb gasket replacement

Greg, The carb leakage you describe is from leaking inlet needles. Get your self 6 carb kits, and take the carbs off and clean and rebuild them. I ended up taking one throttle body w/three carbs off, cleaning the carbs and then reinstalling it. Then I did the other side.

Re: carb gasket replacement

Easy fix just order you 6 carb kits for under 20 a piece. There is no linkage to take loose just remove the plastic carbs each has 4 3/8 bolts. Get the kits and a can of carb cleaner maybe and air hose if you have one and get them good and clean and replace all the parts. You might need a little grease to get the oring gaskets to stick just right. It really isnt that big of a job if you have a little ability. You will also need some cable ties to tighten up your fuel lines when replacing. As for shop price I would say 250.00 for a rebuild vs. 120.00 for the do it yourselfer....
