This has me stumped right now, so it's time to reach out for some help for once.

These are the things I've done to get this old bird back to running like the old days:

New coils (cracked so replaced)
Swapped out stator (old one cracked and leaked)
New plugs (of course)
Cleaned up carbs, new kits
New bulb, fuel lines to replace old weathered ones

I get a good spark jumping from all coils, so I feel safe to rule out spark. It has good compression ~110 on each cylinder +/-5. It's been a booger to get started and then it acted like it wanted to only run on a couple slugs so I investigated and found funky stator so swapped with a used one. The bulb pumps up firm, and I can tell the fuel is filling bowls cuz I can hear it, plus the gaskets tend to be a tad leaky. It's acting like no gas so I squirt some fuel in carb throats and it'll fire like that.

I'm just needing some troubleshooting help other than the typical "compression, spark, etc" things I've already covered those bases.

Thanks in advance!

Hey Mike!

Does it fire and stay running or fires off on the "squirt" and dies? If it fires and stays running, you might have a problem with the choke plates going all the way closed. Don't remember if we explored this area or not in the past. But the choke plates must close all the way or she will be a booger to start.

If on the other hand it fires and dies, you may need to go back to the carbs, soak them out good and re-assemable. How did you rebuild them the first time.....I mean how did ya' clean them?

Yeah the choke plates are closed, and it only fires briefly off the the gas that is shot into the carbs. I may go ahead and rip them apart and see what I can find. I pulled the gas tank out of boat the other day to give it a good look over, and honestly there wasn't much as far a crud in the tank, but since it's there I'm wondering if maybe a couple pieces of it may have gotten in the jets. Makes me wonder though cause I did give them a good cleaning, but it's possible I skipped a step or two.

You've been a big help so far, and I'm not a bit surprised that you're the first to respond!

When you redo the carbs, give them a good soak in carb cleaner. It gets the gunk out that just choke and carb cleaner can't.

Keep us posted on what's going on Mike.

Okey doke OBJ, I got some of the really potent stuff from NAPA, in the gallon can. I'll clean them up and see what happens.
